THE EFFECTS OF PAPAVERINE AND TRIAMCINOLONE ON ENHANCING EXPANSION OF GUINEA PIG SKIN

Abstract
One of the problems associated with tissue expansion is the formation of a fibrous capsule around the expander, which limits rapid expansion of the overlying tissues.
This study was designed to assess the effectiveness of papaverine (anticontractile agent) and triamcinolone, which inhibits collagen synthesis, on the enhacement of tissue expanison. Expansion was carried out on guinea pig back skin with round type expanders modified by the addition of a perforated catheter to deliver the druge.
Thirty adult guinea pigs were evenly assigned to three groups. One group was served as control, the other two groups were experimental.
In the Papaverine group, Papaverine was used for enhancement of tissue expansion. In the Triamcinolone group, Triamcinolone was used. After full expansion with 30 cc of saline for 6 weeks, the area over the central portion of the expander was measured and compared to the area before expansion and then expansion rate was calculated. The central portion of expanded tissue was examined histologically.
The results were as follows ;
1. The rates of expansion were significantly increased in the experimental groups (110.7 ¡¾ 14.8 in control group, 179.6 ¡¾16.2¢¥ in Papaverine group, 192.8 ¡¾ 21.9 in Triamcinolone group) but in the Triamcinolone group, the complication rate was high.
2. Histologic examination showed thin capsule consisted with parallel collagen arrangement in
